What to Expect After Surgery

Immediately after your procedure, you will be moved to the recovery area, where you will be closely monitored as the anesthesia wears off. Once you are awake and stable, you will be moved to your recovery room for rest. Depending on the type of surgery, Dr. Leong may recommend that you stay overnight for additional care. While every patient’s recovery is unique, here are some common aspects of the post-operative process:

Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising are common after facial surgery, and the extent can vary depending on the procedure. Swelling may peak within the first few days and gradually subside over the following weeks. Ice packs can help reduce swelling in the initial recovery period.
Discomfort and Pain: Mild discomfort is expected, and Dr. Leong will prescribe pain medication to manage any discomfort during your recovery. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to minimize the risk of infection.
Bandages and Dressings: For certain procedures, you may be required to wear bandages or dressings to protect the surgical site. These will be removed during your first post-operative visit.

Post-Operative Instructions

Dr. Leong will provide you with personalized instructions tailored to your specific procedure. These instructions are designed to ensure optimal healing and avoid complications. It is critical that you follow these guidelines carefully:

General Post-Operative Guidelines:

Rest and Recovery: Take plenty of time to rest during the first few days after surgery. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for the first several weeks.
Head Elevation: Keep your head elevated, especially when sleeping, to help minimize swelling. Sleeping with your head propped up on pillows for the first few nights can significantly reduce swelling.
Cold Compresses: Apply cold compresses to the affected area as instructed to reduce swelling and bruising in the early days following surgery.
Medications: Take any prescribed medications as directed. Follow up on antibiotic treatments to minimize the risk of infection and help the healing process.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking and alcohol can significantly hinder your healing process. We strongly advise against both during your recovery period.

Facelift: Gentle cleaning of the incision sites, managing drains (if any), and avoiding excessive movement of the facial muscles.

Typical Follow-Up Schedule:

First Visit: Within 1-2 days after surgery to check for any immediate concerns, remove dressings, and ensure proper healing.
Subsequent Visits: Weekly or bi-weekly, depending on the procedure, to monitor progress, remove sutures, and track any changes in swelling or bruising.

These visits will allow you to see the results of your procedure as they begin to unfold.

When to Contact Us

While most recoveries go smoothly, there are a few warning signs that require immediate attention. Please contact us if you experience any of the following:
