What Is Latisse®?

Latisse® is a prescription treatment that promotes the growth of longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes. This FDA-approved product is ideal for individuals who have short or thinning eyelashes and desire fuller, more youthful lashes. It’s a great option for people at least 18 years of age, in good health, and looking to enhance their natural lashes without the need for extensions or mascara. At Leong Facial Plastic Surgery in New York City, we offer personalized consultations for patients who are interested in learning more about Latisse® and how it can enhance the beauty of their eyes.

How Does Latisse® Work?

The active ingredient in Latisse®, Bimatoprost, was initially used in prescription eye drops for people with glaucoma. However, it was discovered to also encourage eyelash growth. The makers of Latisse® (Allergan) separated this ingredient and formulated it for cosmetic use to help those suffering from hypertrichosis (short or thinning lashes). Latisse® works by extending the growth phase of the eyelashes, which allows them to grow longer, fuller, and darker over time. In clinical studies, Latisse® showed impressive results:

  • Eyelash length improved by 25% after 16 weeks.
  • Thickness and fullness increased by 106%.
  • Lashes became 18% darker.

With consistent use, Latisse® can help you achieve beautiful, natural lashes that stand out.

How to Apply Latisse®

Applying Latisse® is simple and easy. Just follow these steps for optimal results:

  1. Cleanse your face and remove any makeup, especially eye makeup.
  2. Remove the applicator bottle from the box and place a drop of the solution on the tip of the applicator brush.
  3. Apply the solution to the skin of your upper eyelid, just above the eyelashes.
  4. Blot away any excess solution.
  5. Dispose of the applicator after each use. Use a fresh applicator for each eye.
  6. Repeat the process for your other eye.

It’s important to apply Latisse® to the upper eyelid only. Avoid applying it to the lower lash line, as this can lead to unwanted side effects.

Is Latisse® Permanent?

The effects of Latisse® are not permanent. If you stop using the product, your eyelashes will gradually return to their original length and appearance. To maintain the full, thick lashes that Latisse® provides, it is important to continue using it regularly.
