How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to target and damage hair follicles, inhibiting future hair growth without harming the surrounding skin. At Leong Facial Plastic Surgery, we use the Palomar Starlux 500 system, which delivers precise energy to the hair follicles. The treatment is most effective for dark hair, as the light is attracted to pigment but may not work on blonde, red, or gray hair.

Typically, six treatment sessions are recommended to ensure the best results, spaced out 4 to 8 weeks apart. The treatment is most effective when scheduled during the fall or winter months to avoid sun exposure, which can affect results.

What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Before your treatment, a numbing cream with lidocaine may be applied to minimize discomfort, leaving it on for about 30 minutes to an hour. Once the numbing cream is removed, a cool gel is applied to the treatment area, and the handpiece is gently passed over the skin to deliver the IPL energy. Treatment duration varies depending on the area being treated, ranging from just a few minutes (for small areas like the upper lip) to around 90 minutes for larger areas like the full legs.

Preparing for Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

To ensure optimal results and minimize potential risks, follow these important pre-treatment guidelines:

Avoid sun exposure: Stay out of the sun or tanning booths for at least one month before and after your treatment to prevent hyperpigmentation.
Shave before treatment: Shaving the area beforehand helps avoid the “shadowing” effect caused by hair above the skin’s surface. Refrain from waxing or plucking the area prior to your session.
Avoid certain products: Discontinue the use of waxing and plucking methods, and avoid applying products that may irritate the skin prior to treatment.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is most effective for individuals with light skin and dark hair. If you have darker skin, IPL treatments may not be suitable due to the risk of hyperpigmentation. It’s essential to have realistic expectations for the treatment. The procedure is not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful, and Is There Any Downtime?
